    Each coin has .2499 oz
Liberia began as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS), who  believed black people would face better chances for freedom and prosperity  in Africa than in the United States.
The country declared its independence on July 26, 1847. The U.S. did  not recognize Liberia's independence until February 5, 1862, during the American  Civil War. Between January 7, 1822, and the American Civil War, more than 15,000  freed and free-born black people who faced legislated limits in the U.S., and  3,198 Afro-Caribbean, relocated to the settlement. The settlers carried their  culture and tradition with them.
The Liberian constitution and flag were modeled after those of the U.S. On  January 3, 1848, Joseph Jenkins Roberts, a wealthy, free-born African American  from Virginia who settled in Liberia, was elected Liberia's  first president after the people proclaimed independence.
The US Mint designed the original Stella in 1879 in an attempt to provide a coin  comparable to the ones used in Europe. Those coins were worth about .88, while  the Stellas were struck with a face value. The coins struck were reviewed by  Congress, which rejected issuance of the coin for circulation.
As a result, the coins were struck in just two years, 1879 and 1880, and only   659 are known to survive today. Each piece was struck at Commonwealth Mint from 1 oz of .999 fine gold.
Classic Stella Designs by Charles Barber and George T. Morgan
The medals bear two different obverse designs. One features a Flowing Hair  design by Charles Barber, and the other a Coiled Hair design by George T.  Morgan. The former features an older depiction of Liberty. The anniversary  dates, "1879-2019," are inscribed below the left-facing portraits.
These medals, like the original coin, get their name from the reverse design, a  single star. "Stella" is Latin for "star." The reverse is common to both coins.  Within the star are the inscriptions "ONE STELLA" and "140TH ANNIVERSARY." The  original coins bore the inscription "400" under "ONE STTELLA." "UNITED STATES OF  AMERICA" and "FOUR DOL" are inscribed along the rim, with other inscriptions  included just inside those.
