Russian Inlaid Straw Boxes are made with all natural materials.  The wood is very
light-colored and smooth LINDEN WOOD which is dried for two years
before the wood is cut and refined to construct the box.
After the box is produced it is covered with several layers of various lacquer materials, and then the "
incrustators
"...the artisans who create the intricate geometric design...begin their meticulous work.
The
incrustators
use thinly shredded pieces of rye straw, which is first
bleached and treated with heat to create the different shades of color.
Depending on the size of the box, some 300 to as many
as
15,000 pieces of straw
are required to create a design.
The straw pieces are manually carved and
individually applied to the box!
