Description
Beautiful, vintage handwoven cotton and dyed African indigo fabric, made by the Dogon in Mali and sewn into a poncho. The textile for this top was dyed with the resist, stitch/tie dying technique in a pattern which I was told represents cowrie shells (a very important item in Africa, and formerly used in trade, as money). I sometimes think they look more like “mouths”!Piece has 8 medium weight, hand woven cotton strips sewn together and a nicely made and finished hole to pull over the head. 39” x 70”; Very good-excellent condition: unfinished ends with loose threads and weaving, which you could leave as is, trim, or want to hem/seam, a large hole/loosening of weaving at the bottom, and a few, hard to see holes toward the neck. This is a fun “work of art” to wear, and I have a few similar ones I love covering myself with!
I had first choice of several large containers of indigos
as they arrived directly from Africa and picked the most unusual designs and those in the best condition. There are always a few flaws, which I will note in my
listings and photographs. Please follow my store as I continue to sell the many pieces of African textiles in my “stash”. I am also having ponchos made in African now from recycled older, worn, and slightly damaged indigos into one-of-a-kind ponchos, so check these out too!
