Vintage Russian Stone Carving Cow Size 3 3/4"
This unique stone carving originates in the western spur of the Ural mountains, where there are large deposits of white, grey and colored gypsum; brown spar, resembling fossil wood; grey travertine; selenite (satin spar), a semi transparent stone with a tender yellow-ochre tint and silky inner luster.
Occurring more rarely is Greyish-green soapstone, potstone, and noble serpentine. The latter acquires a deep black-green hue when polished.
The finishing is done by hand with the help of cutters and files. Each item is polished and then the decorative texture of the stone is brought out and fixed by paraffining (heating to 70 - 80 C.)
